In 2018 Tweddle introduced a Peer Support Worker Pilot (PSW) following a series of inspiring outcomes. A Tweddle High Risk Program client with custody of his toddler was so motivated by his Tweddle parenting journey that he agreed to a number of public speaking opportunities to tell his story.
Tweddle management were driven to create a role not only to provide education and employment, but to utilise the lived experience of a proud dad to become a peer worker and guide others on the same path.
PASDS parents are introduced to the PSW as someone to trust and confide in, who has been in the same 'boat' as the client. Research shows that vulnerable parents learn best and are more receptive when they feel empowered and treated as equals. The PSW pilot demonstrated what happens when a parent is encouraged by the right group of health professionals, is invested in and is so inspired that they go on to become health professionals themselves, changing others' lives.
Following 5 years at Tweddle, our PSW has gone onto also work at the Royal Children's Hospital. Tweddle would like to extend the Peer Support opportunity to another PASDS client and to impact more lives.
Our current PSW asks all clients if they would like to be contacted regarding employment and training opportunities. We have a list of around a dozen child protection parents who have expressed interest.
With thanks to our PSW Pilot, we have a clear Position Description, links and contacts within TAFE, PASDS feedback forms, induction modules and PSW resources.
We would send an EOI to relevant PASDS clients and conduct interviews, commencing with the individual we feel is available and most suited to the commitment required to undertake ongoing employment and training
